The materials that complement the production of our fixtures play an important role in the quality of our products, ensuring the highest standard fixtures in the hands of our consumers.


At Sylvania we have a wide range of ballasts; devices in charge of transforming energy in order to promote the appropriate fluorescent lamps operation. Depending on their structure, they are categorized as magnetic or electronic, or they may also be classified according to the type of lamp.

Ballasts functions are to:

  • Provide controlled energy to switch on fluorescent lamps.
  • Control, regulate and send out the proper amount of electric power, so fluorescent lamps can work at its maximum efficiency.


A fluorescent lamp cannot be directly attached to a power cord since each fluorescent type needs starter voltages, which depends on the lamps length, diameter, construction and gases. Once the fluorescent has started, the ballast must regulate the electric current.

Ballasts are designed for four types of start options, according to the fluorescent lamp:

1. PH or Pre-Heat: These fluorescents require their electrodes to pre-heat before beginning the cycle and they need a starter.

2. QS or Quick Start: Like the previous one, this one needs its electrodes to pre-heat; nevertheless, the ballast is designed to heat the lamp without a starter.

3. RS or Rapid Start: They use low-voltage electrodes that are automatically pre-heated by the ballast, so they do not need a starter. The ballast has a heating coil that starts the lamp and keeps it running.

4. IS or Instant Start: This circuit lights the lamp by giving it a high-voltage discharge between the lamp electrodes, without the assistance of a starter.



    These devices are placed in addition to the normal ballast fluorescent lamps, in order that at the time of failure of electricity supply, they’ll keep the lamp lit for an appropriate period of time to complete any work that could be in progress or to evacuate the place if necessary.


    This type of ballast is more efficient than conventional ones since the design achieves fewer losses. These ballasts work with conventional or energy saving fluorescents.

    • Example:
    • One fixture with two T12 lamps with magnetic ballast for 120V consumes 96W
    • One fixture with two T8 lamps and electronic ballast for 120V consumes 65.6W 30W savings, 68.33%.

    Electronic ballasts use a completely different technology than the one used by the electromagnetic ballasts, since they use electronic components to start the lamp and regulate its operation.

    Currently, new electronic ballasts are manufactured in high efficient designs that allow great benefits such as: longer life, energy saving, less maintenance costs, lower noise levels as well as temperatures and lighter components.


    Ballasts for HID lamps must perform two very important roles:

    Start: High voltage is applied to the lamps through the gases, starting a discharge and maintaining the voltage required to heat the lamp.

    Control or Regulate: When the lamp starts, since it doesn’t have any filament that offers resistance, electric power can develop and cause an accident. Therefore, it is required to use the ballast as a controller in order to regulate and control electric power flow throughout the arch.


Parabolic diffusers represent the most sophisticated and highest optic precision control available for fluorescent fixtures. Its main characteristic is to redirect the generated light outside of the visual disconformity area of 60∞-90∞.

The role of the diffuser is to:

  • 1. Conceal the source of light
  • 2. Control light in an specific area
  • 3. Reduce unwanted reflections
  • 4. Provide a pleasant appearance and reduce brightness

Strict light control is achieved thanks to the vertical shape of the diffusers walls, which work as small reflectors directing the light in a work area from 0∞to 45∞where it can be used more effectively. The nonexistence of light upon a 45∞angle eliminates unwanted reflections and provides an excellent visual effect.

The materials reflect light according to characteristics such as texture and color. For example, surfaces with rough textures and dark colors absorb more light and therefore are less reflective than light smooth finish surfaces.

At Sylvania we know that the greater light output of the fixture depends on an appropriate selection of the reflector’s material, the diffuser, and the paint used in the manufacture of the fixture. High reflectivity paint can be used as part of the fixture’s reflector for its high capacity to redirect the light from the source into the work area.
